Hi, I am Deb Fisher. In the Resource Room, we are working on Reading, Writing and Math skills on each student's level. Students are given small group instruction that reinforces classroom academics. Reading Strategies you can use when your child gets stuck on a word: 1. Reread the Sentence. 2. Sound out the word. 3. Use picture clues. 4. Look for "chunks" in the word. 5. Connect to a word you know. 6. Read on further for clues. Homework tips: 1. Set up a study area. 2. Schedule daily homework time. 3. Encourage your child to work independently. 4. Motivate your child with praise. Testing is done on a yearly basis to determine which students need to be seen by me and which have reached proficiency in English. I then see those students needing assistance two to four times weekly in grade level groups of two to five. We work on speaking and reading English as well as basic understanding of the language.

Trabajo con los estudiantes quienes el ingles no es su lengua primera o nativa. Cada ano un examen esta dado a estos estudiantes para determinar cuales necesitan mi ayuda y cuales son ya competentes en el ingles. Entonces veo los estudiantes quienes necesitan ayuda dos a cuatro veces por semana en grupos de dos a cinco ninos basado en los niveles del grado. Trabajamos con el hablar, el leer, y el escribir al ingles con la meta de tener un entender basico del idioma.

A Speech-Language Pathologist is a professional who specializes in the scientific study of human communication and the diagnosis of speech and language disorders. This includes the assessment of language development and the study of speech competencies as related to educational, medical, social and psychological factors, as well as, the planning, direction, and conduct of intervention and/or rehabilitative treatment programs. Counseling and guidance are done to restore the communication competence of individuals with communicative problems. This may include information as to the nature and treatment of the disabilities. The SLP may also consult medical professionals, educational professionals, and other professional groups regarding human communication and disorders. The scope of practice involves the ability to evaluate, assess, diagnosis and treat disorders of communication.
The American Speech Hearing Language Association has determined that a Code of Ethics shall set the fundamental rules and principles that govern all members. Rules of Ethics are specific standards of acceptable, professional conduct. The fundamentals of ethical conduct are described by Principles of Ethics and by Rules of Ethics as they relate to persons served, to the public and to the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
Principles of Ethics form the underlying moral basis for the Code of Ethics. Individuals shall observe these principles of affirmative obligation under all conditions of professional activity. Requirements for the practicing SLP involve completion of the Master degree, twelve month internship with educational and medical rotation, and the passing of a national examination administered by the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association. These requirements are mandated in order to determine the Clinical Competency of the professionals.
In addition to the Certificate of Clinical Competence (national), the SLP may also hold a license from the State. The Speech Language Pathologist working in the public school will also obtain a teaching license. The SLP may be found in educational, medical, rehabilitative and/or private practice environments.
Wherever the setting, these professionals shall honor their responsibility to hold paramount the welfare of the persons they serve professionally. The SLP/AUD should also honor their responsibility to achieve and maintain the highest level of professional competence. Therefore continuing education hours must be obtained and verified by the State Board of Professionals. It is the responsibility of each professional to uphold the dignity and the autonomy of the profession, maintain harmonious inter-professional and intra-professional relationships and to abide by the professions’ self-imposed standards of excellence.

My name is Dawn Gerber, I am the Literary Assistant here at Wakarusa. Children come to my classroom to get extra work on reading and writing skills. I have had the opportunity to meet all the first graders at some point this year! All first graders get an extra twenty minute reading group on most days. They have made a lot of progress! I also help reinforce math skills with individual students or small groups. Counting money or writing numbers are some of the skills we work on together. I encourage students to practice reading and writing at home. Each evening have your child write a few sentences about what they did during the day, or help them write a letter to a friend or relative. Encourage them to read it to you when they are finished. A regular time for reading is extremely helpful. Try to include fifteen minutes of reading daily. Bedtime is a great time to do this, it's relaxing and great practice!
