Second Grade Teachers

We are glad you are here!

A Note from Mrs. Stubbs

Second Trimester - November 10th - February 20th

Reading

Weekly reading minutes of 75 minutes or more are required to be turned in each Monday.

Accelerated Reading requirement for the second trimester is   6 points with a comprehension percentage of 80% or more.  A. R. reports are sent home every two weeks with the classroom newsletter.

Don’t forget to read to your child.  Setting up a bedtime reading routine is a great way to insure that reading to your child takes place.

Math

Memorization of basic addition facts with sums of 18 should be mastered at the beginning of the second trimester.  During the second trimester we will continue to practice addition facts, but will be concentrating on subtractions facts from 18.

Other areas that can be practiced at home include counting coins, telling time to the half hour and five minutes, fraction of a set and of an object, number patterns, and any kind of math problem solving.

Writer’s Workshop

In Writer’s Workshop during the 2nd trimester the focus will continue to  be the 6 + 1 Writing Traits listed below and also nonfiction writing.

6 + 1 Writing Traits

Ideas (details, development, focus)

Organization (internal structure)

Voice ( tone, purpose, and audience)

Word Choice ( precise language and phrasing)

Sentence Fluency (correctness, rhythm, and cadence)

Conventions ( mechanical correctness)

Presentation (how the piece looks)

Social Studies and Science

In social studies and science during the 2nd trimester we will be covering the following areas:  communities, mapping, careers, traditions, celebrations, polar regions, and polar animals.

Learning Environment

Research shows that when parents become actively involved in their child’s education, schoolwork does show improvement.  As parents, you can strive to make the home another learning environment for your child.

It is my wish that your child has a very positive learning experience this year.  To help make this year a positive one for your child, it is important that we stay in contact.  Please feel free to contact me at school (862-2000)or home 295-7233,
