We are excited to start the
2009-10 school year at Thomas A. Hendricks Elementary!
Hendricks
Elementary is located on St.
Joseph Street beside the Shelbyville Central
Schools Corporation Office where we happily serve over 700 students from
kindergarten to grade 5. Our current
building opened in the Fall of 2000 when the “old” Hendricks School
consolidated with Lora Pearson Elementary.
Since
opening in the 2000-01 school year, Hendricks has seen a steady increase in
student achievement and learning. We
combine a strong staff with best practices in instruction to ensure student
success. We hope to see this success
continue into the upcoming school year!
Utilizing technology, quality text materials, and hands-on opportunities
we work to keep our students motivated and engaged in the learning process.
Academically,
we offer programs to help all students succeed.
In addition to the Indiana State Standards, our classroom teachers
follow a rigorous curriculum map established by Shelbyville Central Schools. Our students in need of academic enrichment
are able to work in our “AE” program in grades 3-5 and receive additional
enrichment in reading and math in kindergarten through grade two. Students requiring additional support can
benefit from our services provided through Blue River Special Education Co-Op
and our many Title I programs. Parents
can work with teachers in the RtI (Response to Intervention) process to address
difficulties at home or school that might make learning a challenge. Finally, students who are developing their English
language abilities benefit from our outstanding “ESL” (English Second Language)
staff who assist them in not only mastering the language but also in being
successful in school.
Hendricks
students stay active with our sports and academic teams. In the fall, our fifth grade girls play
volleyball and our fourth and fifth grade spellers gear-up for Spell Bowl. The winter is all about basketball with up to
5 teams playing between our fifth grade boys and girls. In the spring, our Math Bowl team competes
and one of our most unique teams, the Cup Stackers, is in competition. Finally, our track team competes in the City
Championship at Shelbyville
High School.
The
Hendricks staff works hard to make sure that each child has an opportunity to
feel successful at school. Whether it is
in the classroom, the art room, the gym, or music class, we want every child to
have that feeling of success. Hendricks
Elementary is great place to learn, play, volunteer, and work! We look forward to working with you to make
this a special school year for ALL of our students!
