Our focus skills for the week of Oct. 19 are: 1. How to ask and respond to questions to help us understand nonfiction books 2. Proper nouns--why are these important? When speaking, listening, or reading, it is important to know exactly who or what we are talking about. Instead of saying "I loved that book!." We can say "I loved that story, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie." Or "I like to eat at a restaurant." You can say, "I like to eat at McDonalds." 3. Geometry-2 dimensional (flat shapes) and 3D shapes--sides, edges, and vertices (corners) 4. Counting coin combinations of penny, nickel, dime, and quarter Oct. 26-30: 1. Asking questions as we read stories or text. 2. Making inferences-we take what we know and clues from the story to try and understand what the author is trying to tell us or understand the story. For example, a story might read: It was a cold day. There was snow on the ground. Animals were no where to be found. By reading this, we use what we already know about cold and snow plus what the author has written and understand that it is probably winter. The author doesn't come right out and tell us, we have to use what we know and what we read from the story. 3. Long i words spelled with -igh, ie, and y 4. Writing friendly letters 5. Counting money
