What is Reading Workshop?
Reading Workshop is a time when students learn how to grow as readers. They do this in a number of ways. Where one student might be studying an author's craft, another might be practicing a reading strategy or reflecting in his/her reading journal. So, in reading workshop, students will be doing a number of activities, such as: writing in their reading logs, preparing for their literature circle, reading their independent reading book, practicing a reading strategy, participating in a Guided Reading lesson, preparing for a book talk, or conferencing with me on what they are reading.
Literature Circles
Literature Circles are student formed groups where each student in the group reads the same book. Students are held responsible for completing the reading assignment and for preparing notes for each meeting based on the focus lessons. Students are given a schedule of when they are to meet and what they are to do to prepare for the meeting. When the books are finished, students present their book to the class.
Assessment
Students are assessed in the following areas: daily participation in reading workshop (whole class discussion, exit slips, classroom activities), literature circles, reading letters, Guided Reading participation, book talks, books completed (in their reading level)and
conferencing with teacher.
