Students are expected to read 30 minutes four times during the week, or a total of two hours. They receive grades for the following activities: reading responses, conferences, guided reading (language lab), independent reading, presentations, literature/poetry circles, book talks, notes, and class participation (such as entrance slips, exit slips, and quick writes).
With writing, students are expected to turn in all assigned writings as well as keep their writer's notebook up-to-date. During the school year, students will write in the following genres: essay, short story, memoir, feature article, poetry, research paper, and response to literature. Students are expected to take each writing through the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). Likewise, students are expected to apply what they have learned in focus lessons.
